Conway opens cooling shelters as temperaturs continue to rise

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – The city of Conway is opening cooling centers to residents as the temperatures continue to rise.

According to a press release, the Conway Senior Center will open its doors to any senior citizens who need to escape the heat. The Horry County Council on Aging will help to provide transportation to and from the shelter between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The center will open Tuesday and Wednesday for those who are in need, the release stated. The Conway Senior Center is located at 1519 Mill Pond Road in Conway. Any seniors who need help with transportation should call (843) 248-5523.

Conway city officials are also reminding residents that the lobby of the Conway Public Safety Building is available to those in need of a cool place to stay overnight. The building is open 24/7 and located at 1600 9th Ave.

Here are some tips to get residents prepare for the heat:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Use sunscreen
  • Wear light clothing
  • Avoid strenuous activity
  • Don’t leave people or pets in the car
