Coroner identifies good Samaritan killed trying to help disabled tractor-trailer

DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – A pedestrian was killed while attempting to assist a disabled tractor-trailer Tuesday morning in Darlington County, according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 5:05 a.m. on U.S. 52 near the intersection of U.S. 15. The tractor-trailer became disabled on U.S. 52, blocking both lanes, after the vehicle turned onto the highway from a private driveway, according to Southern.

A 1999 Dodge pick-up truck was traveling southbound on U.S. 52 when the car fatally struck a pedestrian in the roadway, Southern said. He added the pedestrian was attempting to assist the disabled tractor-trailer.

Darlington County Coroner J. Todd Hardee identified the victim as Milton McGee, 47, of Society Hill.

The driver of the pick-up was injured in the crash and transported to McLeod Hospital in Cheraw for treatment, according to Southern.

The crash remains under investigation by SCHP.
