CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – In one week, drivers could soon be traveling on the Conway Main Street Bridge.
The bridge has been closed since January so that South Carolina Department of Transportation could make some repairs. But crews said there was more damage than first thought, so the closure has lasted longer than expected.
SCDOT District Bridge Engineer Travis Patrick said the goal is to still have the bridge open around Memorial Day and they are working to meet that goal.
He said major steel repairs have been completed and the SCDOT is working on deck rehab over the water. He said that portion can only be done during daylight hours.
Crews have been working 24 hours a day, seven days a week to make sure the bridge will reopen in time.
He said once the bridge is ready to drive over, crews will open it up and announce it to drivers.
