HARTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) – A mental health evaluation has been ordered for the Hartsville couple charged in connection with the death of a 2-year-old child.

Will Rogers, with the Fourth Circuit Solicitor’s Office, said 21-year-old Jodi Breanna Holden and 24-year-old Randall Scott Watson Jr., were in court Thursday for bond consideration.

The judge ultimately denied bond for the two and ordered that they both receive the evaluation, according to Rogers.

Both Holden and Watson are charged with homicide by child abuse in connection with the death last month of 2-year-old Aiden Smith, who died at an area hospital after being brought in with severe injuries.

The Darlington County Coroner’s Office previously listed the cause of death as non-accidental blunt force trauma to the head.

Holden was identified by law enforcement as the child’s mother, while Watson is reportedly her boyfriend.

At an April court hearing, Holden’s relatives said she is innocent and would never harm her child. They believe Smith died from injuries he sustained while playing at a playground.
