MARION COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A man drowned in the Little Pee Dee River Thursday after he was thrown from a boat, according to an official with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
Authorities were called around 4 p.m. to the Locust Tree Landing in Marion County.
SCDNR Region Lt. Benjy Byers said two men were in a boat, going up the river when they hit something in the water and both went into the river.
Byers said one of the men was able to get back into the boat and went back to the landing to notify authorities.
“We came down and of course when we got here we went up the river to make sure everything was what they said it was," Byers said. "We ended up recovering the man who had been pitched out of the boat.”
Divers with SCDNR, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Marion County EMS, and Marion County Fire also responded to the scene.
“Communication is key," Byers said. "I mean we have to be in constant communication with one another to know who’s doing what, who’s bringing what, who’s taking care of what and it’s something we train for as far as communication between different agencies and it’s something we do very well at.”
The Marion County Coroner is notifying next of kin before releasing the drowning victim’s name.
