LUMBERTON, NC (WMBF) – One person was arrested over the weekend in Lumberton after allegedly driving a stolen vehicle into a river and trying to swim away from police.
According to a press release from the Lumberton Police Department, 31-year-old Brandon Ivey was arrested for breaking and entering into a motor vehicle, financial card theft and felony conspiracy, felony speeding to elude arrest, fictitious tags, and expired registration. His bond was set at $5,000.
Around 1:22 a.m. Saturday, Lumberton police officers found Ivey driving a burgundy car that was registered to someone else, the release stated.
When officers ran the suspect’s name, they found he had outstanding warrants for his arrest out of Cumberland County. When police told Ivey he was under arrest, he allegedly drove away, heading down 1st Street toward the river.
Eventually, a female passenger jumped from the vehicle before it rolled into the river, according to the release. The suspect swam to the other side and was taken into custody.
The vehicle’s owner has recently changed and the person’s information was not available at the time of the report. The passenger was not injured and was not charged with any crime, according to police.
