SCOTLAND COUNTY, NC (WMBF) – A man wanted by Scotland County authorities is now behind bars in Alabama.
Investigators said Odarious Deshun Peoples was in contact with a 12-year-old girl in Scotland County. They said the communications included elicit conversations and exchanges of “suspected exploitative materials.” Investigators also said Peoples told the 12-year-old he wanted her to leave North Carolina and move to Alabama.
Scotland County Sheriff’s Office reached out to the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office and asked for help locating Peoples.
Authorities said they went to Peoples’ residence in Crenshaw County but he wasn’t home. Then around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Peoples went to the sheriff’s office and asked why they were at his home and they told him he was wanted for a felony, so he was taken into custody, according to investigators.
He is awaiting extradition to Scotland County to face charges of first-degree child exploitation, solicitation of a minor child by computer and indecent liberties with a minor child.
The investigation started in November when the principal of Spring Mills Middle School filed a report. The report indicated that a school electronic device received an IT department flag for suspected pornographic materials being viewed or accessed by a student.
