MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Thousands of unwanted guests could be lurking in your mattress, so it doesn’t hurt to spring clean it.

It'll cost little to no money. All you need are a few items like baking soda.

There are good reasons to freshen up your mattress, such as getting rid of the dirt, dust, and other allergens that can live there.

Professionals said people should freshen up their mattress at least twice a year. Start by vacuuming it, which will get any dead skin cells or visible debris that might be on there. Next, you should focus on all the crevices and seams of the mattress. Then, if you have any, spot treat any stains. One way to do that is with a mixture composed of about four drops of Dawn, an equal amount of water, and either peroxide or vinegar.

After that's done, deodorize by sprinkling a good amount of baking soda. Use the entire box over the whole surface of the mattress and then let it sit for about 30 minutes or more. Finally, vacuum it up and then you’re left with a fresh, clean mattress.

And while it’s not typical, professionals said if you can, try to freshen up your mattress during the summer at least once a week. That’s due to most of us sweating more and a greater number of insects in the air.
