LUMBERTON, NC (WMBF) – A family is sleeping more comfortably after they were surprised Thursday with a new home after they were flooded out twice from Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Matthew.
“This will be remembered for the rest of our lives,” said Divya McArthur.
The Home Depot Foundation and Operation Blessing renovated and furnished a home for the family after they were flooded again last September.
“We were the only house on our street to flood with Florence. Matthew left us with about four feet, Florence left us with about two feet, but both storms we just kind of picked it up and kept it moving,” said McArthur.
She said they knew the protocol when Florence rolled through our area, but it was still a financial struggle.
“You cannot in the midst of adversity just stop,” she said.
McArthur said they were still living in their damaged home up until Thursday. They repaired it to the point where it was livable but she said it still needed work.
Family and friends gathered in the front yard of their home and two trailers pulled away, revealing the finished project.
“It actually still didn’t feel real. Almost like you’re walking through a model home,” she said.
McArthur was brought to tears when she walked inside.
“They know what we’ve gone through,” said McArthur. “I know that they know in depth what we’ve had to overcome in both storms and so I know that it was pure.”
The family is grateful they have another, newer home, where she said hopefully they won’t have to worry about working through the aftermath of a hurricane again.
