Funeral services set for Upstate football standout who died during surgery

SPARTANBURG, SC (WMBF) – Funeral services will take place Saturday for a Spartanburg High School football standout who died unexpectedly during surgery.

A celebration of the life of Nicholas Joshua “Nick” Dixon will take place on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 12 p.m. at Travelers Rest Missionary Baptist Church, located at 110 Brewton Road in Spartanburg, according to information from the J.W. Woodward Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in Heritage Memorial Gardens at 3901 S. Church St., in Roebuck.

According to NBC affiliate WYFF in Greenville, Dixon died on Jan. 11 during surgery.

The defensive standout and part-time running back was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas in 2018 and had several offers to play at the collegiate level, WYFF reported.

Spartanburg High students previously planned a candlelight vigil for the senior that was set to take place on Jan. 13.
