ELIZABETH CITY, NC (WMBF/WRAL) – A veteran formerly stationed at Fort Bragg and recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star recently won $200,000 in the lottery.
According to NBC affiliate WRAL in Raleigh, Elizabeth City resident Howard Smack bought three $5 Mega Millions/Powerball scratch-off tickets, one of them being the last of the game’s top prizes.
“I just had that feeling and I went for it,” Smack said in a press release. “I couldn’t believe it when I won. I may have screamed, just a little bit, I was so excited.”
After taxes, he took home $141,000.
