Horry County coroner concerned after seven fatal overdoses in four days

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Seven people have died in the past four days from drug overdoses in Horry County, according to coroner Robert Edge.

Edge said it is unusual and a cause for concern. He added that he believes the individuals are fatally overdosing on a combination of heroin and other drugs.

According to information from Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden, there were 63 confirmed overdose deaths in 2018. There are 33 additional cases with toxicology pending.

McSpadden said that of the 63 confirmed overdose cases, 36 contained heroin, 33 contained fentanyl and 21 contained cocaine. She added that she began tracking cocaine last year in response to some of the labs, both locally and nationally, indicating the supply was tainted with fentanyl.

Since 2012, there have been 547 confirmed overdose deaths in Horry County, according to information from the coroner’s office. The breakdown of overdose deaths per year is below:

  • 2012: 47
  • 2013: 56
  • 2014: 69
  • 2015: 92
  • 2016: 126
  • 2017: 94
  • 2018: 63 confirmed
