MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - From cranberry sauce to mashed potatoes, ham and desserts galore, the Myrtle Beach Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association provided this and more to the men and women who are serving during Christmas.

Founded in 2014, the Myrtle Beach Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association has been providing meals to the officers working on Christmas ever since.

Two meals were provided Tuesday - one for the officers who worked first shift and another for officers on the night shift.

This simple act of kindness is something that a police officer and mother of a little girl said makes spending the holiday away from family that much easier.

“Yeah, it’s really hard to leave her. What makes it better is this is my family too and we are all spending it together, and I can’t tell you the last time we all sat down at a big table and ate a meal," Myrtle Beach Police Ofc. Andrea Warner said. "So that was nice and we appreciate it a lot.”

“This is one of the few times that they ever get to sit down for a meal or for anything and enjoy each others camaraderie before they have to go back out in the field,” Jim Anderson, MBCPAAA member and volunteer, said.

The officers say though they may not be with their family, they know that being at work is helping yours.

“I’m here to help people, to keep them safe so they can spend time with their family members and loved ones,” said Shannon Fullwood, Patrol Officer with MBPD.

But this kind deed could not have happened without a little help from the community.

“We have lots of sponsors who generously donate to our meals to make it happen,” Tim Hyman, MBCPAAA member and volunteer, said.

And support from the volunteers' families at home...

“I actually had a 5-year-old granddaughter who started her Christmas at 5 a.m. so I could be here and spend time with her first,” said Mike Grehl, MBCPAAA member and volunteer.

But this event doesn’t just happen once a year, the association also provides officers with a meal at Thanksgiving and any other holiday that they are working.
