DCSO warns residents to ‘hang up’ if they receive scam call

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Many have reported a phone scam throughout Darlington County, according to the sheriff’s office.

According to DCSO, a person is calling from 843-309-3061 is says that they are a Deputy with the Sheriff’s Office informing the potential victim they failed to appear for jury duty and must pay a fine over the telephone to avoid being arrested.

The caller instructs the potential victim to go to a local retail store to get a prepaid debit card and give the information to the caller.

The DCSO wants to make sure that people know they do not handle matters related jury duty and that a deputy will never contact you concerning a failure to appear for jury duty.

Also, a deputy will never tell you over the telephone you must pay a fine with a prepaid debit to avoid being arrested.

If you receive this call, hang up.

If you recieve a call that you believe to be a scam, you are urged to contact your local law enforcement agency.
