COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - Going from valuable reserve to starter isn't a giant leap. Going from key bench player to one of the best players in your league in the staten is a bit bigger.
That's exactly what WMBF News Athlete of the Week Katelyn Browne did. As a sophomore, she got solid minutes off the bench. As a junior, she collected All-Tournament, All-Region and MVP honors.
So what does it take to make that jump?
"A 'go out there and beat somebody mindset,' I guess," said Browne.
Browne is a junior at Pee Dee Academy in Mullins. She's a big reason the Golden Eagles have made deep post-season runs the past two seasons. She says she's developed on the floor, but her intangibles set her apart.
"I always do my best, I don't quit, and I play with all my heart," said Browne. "I think that's my best thing - playing with all my heart."
What does someone who made that kind of progress between her sophomore and junior seasons do for an encore? Excel at the next level.
"Just do my best, hope for the same next year, maybe get colleges looking at me," said Browne. "North Carolina is my dream school. I doubt Sylvia Hatchell will ever call me, but if she did, I'd be like, 'You're kidding, right?'"
While North Carolina has the lead for Browne's services if the Tar Heels come calling, she'll be happy playing where ever she goes. She's also considering Wofford or Furman.
