MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach has the chance to win its second basketball state title in its second year of playing in the South Carolina Independent School Association. A big reason why is WMBF News Athlete of the Week PC Henry.
Henry is a senior who's helped get the team off the ground. He's excited for the chance to repeat as SCISA state champs.
"It's a great feeling to be back," he said.
Henry had a choice to make when choosing what high school he'd attend. A talented basketball player, if he chose Christian Academy, he wouldn't have the chance to play for something like a state championship until his junior year.
"Being at a Christian School was very important to me," he commented. "If that means waiting two years, then that's what that means."
His coach was impressed by the decision.
"He could've played at any public school, and he really chose to be here and gave up two years of varsity sports to wait for these two years," said Christian Academy head coach Darren Gore. "I think it was worth it."
At a small school like Christian Academy, players on the basketball team, especially seniors, are well-known among the entire student body. The school hosted a pep rally, complete with a limbo competition, and saw elementary school-aged students yelling the players' names.
"It's fun, like having a bunch of little brothers and sisters," Henry said. "You just have to do the right thing and hope they do the same."
Even with Henry and several other key seniors nearing their last game, our WMBF News Athlete of the Week is confident his Saints will continue their winning tradition.
"We have great coaching, great young guys on the team," he said. "They're going to do great."
