MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Monday morning, the South Carolina Employment Security Commission opened a new unemployment office in Myrtle Beach, hoping to control the floods of people utilizing the Coastal Workforce Center in Conway.

Area Director at the new office, Doris Buffkin, says things were actually fairly slow for opening day, saying they saw about 50 people come in.

"It's been a good thing for it to be a little bit slow," she said. "We do expect it's going to pick-up every single day until we'll probably be just as busy as any of the other offices in the state."

Even though those other offices are seeing the stacks of unemployment filings grow every day, they say their doors are still open to anyone who walks in.

"I just want people to know that they're welcome to come here, or to go there. It doesn't matter," Conway Director Mary Nell Smith said. "We're all the same South Carolina Employment Security Commission and we all want to make sure that people are served as quickly as we can get them their checks and job search."

One woman who came in to the new office Monday says she was doing everything she could to avoid having to go to Conway. She says she was excited to hear about a new branch opening in Myrtle Beach.

"I'm a single mother of three kids, so to go all the way to Conway office and try to get all of that stuff done before they're out of school, it's really hard," she said.

Buffkin says the office has been opened mainly to serve people like Bellany who live on the northern end of the Grand Strand.
