Chandi Lowry

anchor/video journalist | clowry@wmbfnews.com

Being the weekend anchor and videojournalist for WMBF News is a dream come true for Chandi Lowry.

Chandi grew up in the Pittsburgh area and at the age of 5, she and her cousin would tape their own radio shows and pretend to interview big stars like the cast of Sesame Street and Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.

She has always enjoyed talking to people and finding out interesting things about their lives. In the second grade, Chandi decided being an attorney was the career path she wanted to take, until her sophomore year of college when the news bug bit her hard.

Chandi graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and started working at WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh while finishing her degree in communication. There she worked on the assignment desk and produced newscasts. She enjoyed producing and learning all aspects of the business, but Chandi yearned to be a reporter. So it was off to Youngstown, OH where she was a producer/reporter. Chandi also worked in Steubenville, OH at WTOV-TV where she was a full time reporter and had the opportunity to fill-in anchoring.

The best part of being a journalist is "affecting others in a positive way and being able to find out valuable information and give that knowledge to those who would otherwise not have the chance to learn from it," Chandi said.

Outside of the WMBF newsroom, Chandi enjoys cooking, traveling, sports, volunteering in the community, watching mystery and comedy movies and having new and exciting adventures.

Little-known facts

  1. If I could be one famous person, I would be Oprah Winfrey because she has the power to meet and interview practically anyone.
  2. My favorite place to travel is Jamaica because I had the chance to visit Jamaica and live like the locals. My friend took me there when she was visiting her family and it was great! I can stay in a nice hotel and be a tourist anytime in my life, but not many people can say they gained new friends from the neighborhoods, walked up huge rock hills to get to home and enjoy free authentic cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. (I just had to get used to the showers not having hot water, but it was one of my most memorable experiences.)
  3. People in my family have played in the NFL so football runs through my veins. I love the sport, but since I'm from Pittsburgh I would shame any Steelers fan if I didn't commit to the black and gold.

  4. Back in high school people described me as popular, but I didn't find that out until several years after I graduated from college and they told me "I was the most popular girl in school." That didn't matter to me at all during high school. I just liked being friends with everyone no matter where they came from or how others labeled them.
  5. I am the happiest when I am accomplishing a goal and eating. (Not at the same time though.)
  6. My biggest fear is not succeeding so I can help others.
  7. My favorite food is anything seafood.
