One killed in Darlington County crash after fleeing from deputy, hitting utility pole

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – One person was killed and one person was injured following a single-vehicle crash Friday night in Darlington County.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins said the crash happened around 6:20 p.m. on Old Society Hill Road. A pickup truck ran off the roadway and struck a utility pole, he added.

Collins said the driver died as a result of the crash and a passenger was also injured.

Darlington County Sheriff's Lt. Robert Kilgo said the driver fled from authorities before the crash happened. A deputy saw the vehicle in the area of Spring Street in Darlington, and the driver was spinning the truck's tires.

According to Kilgo, the deputy tried to conduct a traffic stop, at which point the driver fled.

The traffic stop was canceled and the deputy later found that the truck had struck the utility pole, Kilgo said, adding that's when the highway patrol was called.
