'We have a duty:' Myrtle Beach officers prepare for Hurricane Florence

MBPD prepares for Hurricane Florence

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Myrtle Beach police will have all hands on deck for Hurricane Florence.

Cpl. Thomas Vest with the Myrtle Beach Police Department said extra officers will be working for the storm.

Vest and other officers were out Wednesday patrolling neighborhoods to make sure their presence was known ahead of the storm.

"We have extra manpower on the road," Vest said. "Obviously safety is our No. 1 priority. We're very concerned about people's property. We want to make sure everybody knows that we are out. We're patrolling. We have extra manpower available to do so, so that people can feel safe in leaving their property while we're out."

Vest emphasized that anyone who hasn't evacuated yet should. He added even though it's dangerous to be out in the conditions, it's part of the job.

"We have a duty to everybody here in the city and we take that very seriously," Vest said.

If winds get too strong, officers will be pulled off the roads.
