DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) – Some of Darlington County's brightest young minds had the chance to visit the Darlington Raceway Friday for a field trip of a lifetime.
About two dozen students from Kindergarten through 8th grade were selected to go because of their outstanding performance in reading. They completed their summer reading program, so this field trip was a reward for them.
People from ScienceSouth got to teach the kids about the science of race cars, and they got to build their own little cars out of things like lids and CDs.
They also got to race them once they finished building them.
The kids also got a surprise visit from NASCAR driver Kyle Larson, driver of the 42 car.
Ken Reynolds, Director of Corporate and Community Affairs for Bojangles says the whole idea is to reward good performance in the classroom.
"We are also making sure that the kids continue to read today, so we are sending every kid out with five books to read at their leisure," Reynolds said.
