HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A Myrtle Beach man was arrested after allegedly hitting a 5-year-old boy with a plastic sword.
Online records from the J. Reuben Long Detention Center state Gustavo Madruga Dias, 27, was charged with one count of cruelty to children. H was released from jail Wednesday on a $250 bond.
According to an Horry County Police Department incident report, the child went to school on Monday and teachers noticed bruising on his left arm and back. When asked about the bruises, the alleged victim claimed the suspect, who is not a relative, did it by striking him with the sword for not taking a nap.
The suspect's version of events was the same as the child's, according to the report. Police explained to him the actions were a violation of the state's code of laws.
"He stated that he felt that laws were weak here about discipline and that he got beat much worse in Brazil where he grew up," the report stated.
The matter was presented to a judge, who found probable cause to issue a warrant.
