MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Hurricane Beryl becomes the first hurricane of the season early Friday morning.  It remains in the central Atlantic Ocean as a category 1 storm.

As of 5 a.m. Friday, the center of Hurricane Beryl was located near latitude 10.3 North, longitude 42.3 West.  The hurricane is moving toward the west near 14 mph.  A fast westward to west-northwestward motion is expected through Friday and into the weekend. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 75 mph with higher gusts. Because of increasing wind shear and dry air, the system is forecast to weaken as it approaches the Caribbean Islands by late in the weekend.
