CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

SLED is investigating after a suspect died following an arrest by the Clemson Police Department early Friday morning.

Clemson police Chief Jimmy Dixon said his officers were called to the 7-Eleven on Highway 93 in Clemson around 2 a.m. for a fight at the gas station.

By the time they arrived, the suspect had locked himself in the store and was destroying things inside.

Police said the other person in the fight was a person who had been trying to help the suspect with a motorcycle that would not start.

When officers entered the store, Dixon said the suspect charged at and began fighting officers.

Once the suspect was under control, EMS was called to transport the suspect. The suspect later became unresponsive and was pronounced dead, Dixon said.

SLED was called in to investigate the death.

The coroner identified the suspect as Robert Eugene Gambrell III, age 33, from Seneca.
