CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

He's a legendary coach who won Clemson's first national college football championship and now Danny Ford is back on a field.

"I've always been a farmer with cattle and hay," Ford said.

And now he's one of 20 farmers in South Carolina who can now legally grow industrial hemp on his property.

"We got our certificate and we can legally grow hemp put to 20 acres," he said.

The Industrial Hemp Program is part of a research pilot for the state.

"Twenty-five thousand uses and right before the war, it was the biggest crop in the United States of America," Ford said.

Hemp is a cannabis plant, but is referred to as the non-psychoactive form of cannabis which means unlike marijuana, it contains less than one percent of THC, the mind-altering ingredient found in cannabis plants.

"I know that Boeing, and BMW, and Volvo are looking to make fiber from it to make plastics to put in automobiles," Ford said.

Sally McKay, the communications director with the South Carolina Department of Agriculture, said, "Most of our growers are growing CBD Oil. A couple of our farmers are also growing for textile use."

She says next year the application process will start again and administrators with the department will issue permits to 40 farmers to grow up to 40 acres of hemp.

"The growers are required to have their industrial hemp plants tested," McKay said. "To make sure that the levels of THC are in keeping with the proper levels to be classified as industrial hemp."

Ford says he's ready and is already mapping a game plan for growth.
