GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Firefighters are asking people to avoid Academy Street near McBee Avenue and Washington Street in downtown Greenville after a water main break Wednesday morning.

Will Broscious with the Greenville Fire Department said some ice accumulation was reported due to the water flow and asked drivers to avoid the area until public works could get on scene and assess the situation.

Greenville Water said water had been turned off in that area but no customers should lose service.

“Because that is a high traffic area, we expect to make repairs tonight beginning at 7p.m.,” said Olivia Stone with Greenville Water. “We do expect to close lanes of traffic for repairs. Our crew is currently preparing a plan to repair that break.”

Around 12:30 p.m., Greenville Water said crews were assessing another water main break on Parker Road. As of 2:00 p.m., Greenville Water said customers were still without water due to the break.

The company said they were unsure how many customers were affected by the Parker Road break.

Greenville Water said crews will be working until all breaks are repaired. The company said crews try to get water main breaks repaired within five hours, but i could take longer.

According to Greenville Water, lanes are closed at Academy Street and Parker Road during the repairs. The company says detours will be in place, but is encouraging people to take alternative routes if possible.
