HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – It was a big day for Horry County Sheriff Phillip Thompson, as he received the award for Sheriff of the Year from the South Carolina Sheriffs' Association on Monday night.
The event took place at the Mariott Grand Dunes in Myrtle Beach.
This award is something each of the state's 46 sheriffs voted for. This year, the most votes went to Thompson.
He's been working as the sheriff here in Horry County for 17 years, and the honor is something he's really excited about.
"It's just a great honor that the other sheriffs of the state chose me to be the sheriff of the year," Thompson said ahead of the presentation.
He gave most of his thanks to his family.
"[My family] has supported me through all the years of law enforcement through the different agencies and departments I've worked with," Thompson said. "They've always supported me in law enforcement."
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster was also at the event. He spoke about many things, including the importance of sheriffs.
Thompson is also honored to join an elite group of previous winners.
"I've seen other people and the others," Thompson said. "To be in the same group as the sheriffs of the year before me, it just makes you feel so good to know you'd be named in that particular group of people."
