HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The Horry County Council is hosting a workshop next week to hear from the public on a proposed ordinance that would prohibit firing guns in the county’s more densely populated areas.

According to information from Horry County Government, the workshop is set for Wednesday, May 5, at 5 p.m. in county council chambers.

County staff will present a presentation on the proposed ordinance before giving the public a chance to comment on it.

Earlier this year, the county council tabled first reading of the ordinance, opting instead to hold the workshop to address amendments and hear from the public.

The proposed ordinance is a result of residents in the county’s more densely populated areas saying they have heard sporadic gunfire day and night, and seen bullets lodged in their homes.

Council Chairman Mark Lazarus previously said the possible action is not an effort to take away any Horry County resident’s guns or Second Amendment rights. He instead referred to it as a “common sense ordinance.”
