HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Horry County Council is moving forward with plans to demolish vacant houses.

A newly proposed ordinance would give council the authority to get rid of abandoned homes. County officials said these homes are a safety hazard and an eye sore.

“It’s been an issue. We do have lots of homes within the county that are uninhabitable that have been abounded.” said Lisa Bourcier, county spokesperson. “Whether it’s a husband and wife couple that had passed away and the property is paid off but they have no family locally, and then the property just sits there and decays. It becomes a haven for animals, crime and it looks bad. It really runs down the neighborhood value.”

The county will investigate homes the community brings to its attention. If a house is found to be in violation, the owner will be notified and given the option to fix or demolish the building.

If the owner declines, the county will have the power to take the home down. A fund will be set up to pay for the work.

“We will front the program with $500,000 and that money should help to generate its own funding through the lean process,” Bourcier said.

The first reading of the ordinance will be discussed at Tuesday's Horry County Council Meeting.
