UPDATE: Correctional staff in Bennettsville assaulted by inmates, prison placed on lockdown

BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - Staff at Evans Correctional Institution were assaulted by inmates Thursday morning according to, Sommer Sharpe, the Public Information Director for the South Carolina Department of Corrections.  

Sharpe calls this an isolated incident that is now under control.

Four inmates assaulted two correctional officers. The officers were transported to an outside medical facility to receive treatment for their injuries and were later released. The facility is on lockdown, and there was no threat to public safety. This incident is being investigated by South Carolina Department of Corrections Police Services Division.

Evans Correctional is located along Highway 9 in Bennettsville.

    GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) -- A man who pled guilty to a home burglary in Georgetown was sentenced to nine years in prison, according to a press release from the Fifteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. A homeowner told police that he walked in his dining room to find Cicero Manuel Lambert, 36, who told the homeowner he was “looking for a cup of sugar” before he ran from the home.
