MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A Marlboro County Sheriff's deputy suffered a broken arm and cuts to the head after being assaulted by a suspect with a cane on Wednesday night, according to Sheriff Charles Lemon.
Lt. Jamie Seales said Thursday the deputy had been released from the hospital.
Lemon said Damiane McCoy, 32, was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, assault on an officer, and resisting arrest.
According to the sheriff, the incident started after deputies were called to a home on Zion Street in Clio. There, the suspect allegedly was saying a 10-month-old girl was his daughter, while others present said that was not the case.
Law enforcement was trying to talk to the suspect and get him to put the infant down, at which point he reportedly became belligerent, Lemon said. That then led to the reported assault on the deputy with the metal cane.
