MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) - Brookgreen Gardens has set up a GoFundMe account in an effort to support the preservation of the area’s native wildlife.

The goal is to raise $3,500 by the end of the month for a custom made, all-aluminum secure crate, which would help transport otters from Brookgreen to other zoos. As of 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, approximately $3,025 had been raised.

According to the post, Brookgreen's Native Wildlife Zoo participates in an Association of Zoos and Aquariums-managed breeding program with North American river otters, which ships otters back and forth with other zoos.

The "otter-tested" crate would be in service for years.
