DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A Darlington County Sheriff’s deputy was attacked and bitten by a dog after he responded to Welling Farm Road in the Darlington area March 19 at around 9 p.m., according to a press release.

The deputy discharged his weapon in the direction of the dog, the release states. He was also taken to a local hospital after receiving a wound to his leg. The sheriff's office said the deputy is back at work and doing okay.

Lt. Robert Kilgo with DCSO said the deputy arrived at the home and the dog started to attack him, he utilized his Taser to try and scare the dog away and protect himself, after that failed, the deputy then pulled out his gun.

Terry Harkless, 44, was arrested and charged with domestic violence, third-degree assault and battery, assaulting an officer while resisting arrest, ownership of a dangerous animal and unconfined dangerous animal.

The dog was later found uninjured, and is being quarantined, according to the DCSO.

Sven Hasselriis was home when the deputy was bitten. He said he has have noticed dogs roaming around the neighborhood before.

“It’s a question of you don’t know how widespread this problem is," Hasselriis said.

DCSO said a dog must be leashed on someone’s property and kept under control, according to the Darlington County South Carolina Code of Ordinances.

It also states a dog is never allowed to roam on other people’s property.

“It frustrates me, although I realize that resources are limited and it’s hard for local animal control to take care of the situation,” Hasselriis said. “There must be something that they can do.”

He added it hits close to home after their dog was bitten seven times by two dogs last December.

“Yes, we called animal control and made a report. Thank goodness he healed," Hasselriis said.

The man is not sure if the dog attackers are related.

“Ever since then, we have faithfully taken the dogs out on a leash no questions,” Hasselriis said. “Don’t dare take them let them out by themselves, even in the daytime, just to be on the safe side."
