DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The Darlington County Sheriff’s Office is warning area businesses of a phone scam in which the caller claims to be with Duke Energy.

According to a DCSO press release, investigators were first made aware of the scam on Monday. The callers state they are with Duke Energy and the business’ power will be disconnected.

“The scammers demand an associated of the business go to a local retail store to purchase gift cards and to give the gift card information to the scammer over the telephone,” the release stated.

DCSO investigators advise that people hang up if they get one of these calls. Duke Energy will not demand payment in the form of a gift card, according to the release.
