CONWAY – Zach Hopeck struck out a career high six and only allowed two hits over eight innings as #18 Coastal Carolina won its fifth straight with a 6-1 victory over San Francisco (Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Tidelands Health Classic at Springs Brooks Stadium.

The Chanticleers, playing their 14th game in a 17-day span, improve to 9-5 overall thanks to five straight solid pitching performances.

Coastal struck out 14 Seahawks in a 4-1 win at UNC Wilmington on Wednesday before each of CCU’s four weekend starters established career highs in strikeouts. First, Alex Cunningham set a CCU single-game record with 14 K’s Friday. On Saturday, Andrew Beckwith had a career-high 10 strikeouts versus Winthrop before Jason Bilous fanned eight versus Albany in the nightcap.

Sunday, while Hopeck (1-1) only allowed two hits, both were doubles in the second inning that led to the Dons’ lone run. Hopeck also only allowed one walk with his six strikeouts over eight innings.

Reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week Kevin Woodall Jr., continued to lead the Chanticleers Sunday, going 2-for-3 with an RBI single and solo home run. The junior had at least one RBI in each of CCU’s five games this week, including four games with two RBI. In fact, he had two RBI in the Albany game despite going 0-for-3 thanks to an RBI walk and sacrifice fly.

The Dons (8-5) got on the scoreboard first. Dominic Miroglio doubled and scored on a two-out double by Manny Ramirez Jr., for an early 1-0 lead.

Coastal scored three runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Jordan Gore, who had two hits, got things started with an infield single and CCU loaded the bases thanks to walks to Matt Beaird and Billy Cooke. Wood Myers lined a two-run single down the right field line to score Gore and Beaird. Kevin Woodall Jr., followed with an RBI single down the left field line for a 3-0 lead.

The Chants added a run in the fourth. Kieton Rivers walked and moved to second a sacrifice bunt from Gore. Rivers later stole third and scored on an RBI single by Cooke.

Coastal extended its lead to 6-1 with a pair of runs in the seventh. Woodall hit his seventh home run of the season to start the home half. Later, Dalton Ewing doubled and scored on a pinch-hit, RBI single by Peyton Isaacson. Isaacson, who was Coastal’s most used pinch hitter last season, is 3-for-4 as a pinch hitter this season, including 3-for-3 this weekend alone, with a pair of RBI.

Coastal Carolina will continue its eight-game home stand by hosting Wake Forest at 4 pm on Wednesday (Mar. 8).
