MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – On Saturday night, Myrtle Beach Speedway released bracket pairings for the Daytona 1 Beach Madness season-long competition.
During a special edition of Myrtle Beach Speedway's Facebook Live show, Riding Shotgun with Mike Neff, the head-to-head pairings were revealed for the 32 drivers entered into the Daytona 1 Beach Madness Dash for Cash. Similar to the NCAA College Basketball Tournament, drivers were seeded based on average finishes, results at the track and various other factors.
The four No. 1 seeds include local racers Sam Yarbrough and Matt Cox, 2017 IceBreaker winner Lee Pulliam and Tommy Lemons Jr.
The Daytona 1 Beach Madness will consist of three rounds: Practice Round, Qualifying Round and Feature. At the end of the year during the Myrtle Beach 400 in November, the winner of the Daytona 1 Beach Madness Dash for Cash will receive an extra $5,000 bonus purse.
Keep in mind that the number of race cars on the track are not limited to only Daytona 1 Beach Madness competitors. The actual weekly racing continues as it has been over the decades. Also, during each round of the Daytona 1 Beach Madness Dash for Cash, drivers will count their best four finishes.
During the Practice Round, drivers' finishes will be compared to their paired competitor throughout the first five races of the season. At the end of the Practice Round, 16 drivers will advance in the bracket, just like the "Sweet 16" in college basketball.
The Qualifying Round will be the next five races of the season, and eight drivers will advance in the bracket.
The winner out of the final four drivers in the Feature that also consists of five races, will receive a Gold invitation to the Daytona 1 Beach Madness Dash for Cash.
Now, there are two additional ways to qualify and compete for the big purse that will be handed out following the Myrtle Beach 400.
Drivers can win their eligibility back through the BattleBack Wild Card that will take place during a 50-lap race on Saturday, October 21. The top-two finishes of the race will receive Silver invitations; however, five previous season starts are required to advance in the competition.
The final ways to qualify for the Daytona 1 Beach Madness Dash for Cash are to have won the IceBreaker back in February, win the Sun Fun on Saturday, July 8 or to become the Late Model Track Champion. As of this moment, Lee Pulliam, who won the IceBreaker is the only driver locked into the Daytona 1 Beach Madness Dash for Cash, assuming that he competes in four more races this season at the speedway.
On top of their guaranteed starting spot in the Myrtle Beach 400, Gold invitation drivers will also receive a free driver pit pass and a free set of tires for the prestigious race. Silver invitation drivers will also receive a free pit pass, as well as 20 gallons worth of free fuel.
