Loris man arrested in Christmas Day murder

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A Loris man was arrested and charged with murder after officers responded to a shooting incident on Kennedy Street in Loris on Christmas Day, according to an Horry County police report.

Upon arrival, officers observed an unknown black male laying in the roadway of Kennedy Street. He was later identified and EMS stated that he was deceased.

According to Loris police, the suspect, 50-year-old Roger Dale Grate, of Loris, was detained and the alleged handgun was removed.

Horry County police said they investigated the area and attempted to field interview residents in reference to the incident, but were unsuccessful.

The report states that family members of the victim were also on the scene providing assistance to the victim.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick previously identified the victim as Darrell D. Doctor, 40, of Loris, who died from a gunshot wound to the head.

    SOCASTEE, SC (WMBF) - A sandbag collection drew hundreds of people at Socastee High School as many are preparing for the imminent flooding from the Waccamaw River. Some in the crowd had arrived at the high school as early as 8:30 Thursday morning, and by noon as many as 12,000 sandbags had been filled. A line of cars wrapped around the school and some said they saw six truckloads of sand get dropped off and that there seemed to be a real sense of urgency shown by everyone there...
