FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The annual financial audit for Florence County School District Three shows a $1.6 million deficit from the 2015-2016 school year, according to information from the district.
The auditor stated FSD3 has a "clean audit," but noted the district's general fund budget is "distressed," according to a statement.
During the previous school year, district officials noted there were several areas where expenses exceeded the budget, with a major one being special education services.
"We had a large shortfall in Medicaid revenue that caused a deficit in the general fund budget," the district statement read in part.
FSD3 Superintendent Laura Hickson has begun analyzing all programs, positions and services to address the deficit.
As positions become vacant, they will be placed on hold unless it is absolutely necessary to fill them, according to the district. Additionally, a hold has been placed on most travel and supply purchases.
