MARION COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A former boys' basketball coach at Hannah-Pamplico High School passed away Sunday.
Solomon Williamson took his team to the lower state championship two years ago, according to Leon Sturkey, the Marion County School District Director of Operations. Williamson also served as an assistant basketball coach at Darlington High School.
Sturkey said Williamson's greatest impact was showing young people, regardless of adversity that they face, that they keep going and doing the best they can even through difficult circumstances.
Williamson was hired by the Marion County School District in July 2016, when he was already in the advanced stages of pancreatic cancer, according to Marion County School District spokeswoman Deborah Wimberly. Williamson left coaching basketball because of his cancer, and was hired by the district as an operations specialist. Sturkey said Williamson handled a myriad of tasks, but because of his athletic experience, did a lot with athletics.
A funeral for Williamson will be held Saturday at 12 p.m. at Darlington High School. He is survived by his wife and children.
