MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – The Upstate took the upper hand once again in its annual series with the South on Saturday afternoon, winning 21-14 in the 2016 Touchstone Cooperatives Energy Bowl. The North jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and was able to hold on for its second straight win in the series.
Conway quarterback Peyton Derrick threw for two touchdowns, connecting with Tyrese Nick from Strom Thurmond on the first and a 51-yard strike to Lake City wide receiver Jalen Barr in the fourth quarter. Barr was named the South team's offensive MVP.
Cedric Smith from Richland Northeast was the North team offensive MVP, while Belton-Honea Path's Akyah Miranda was the team's defensive MVP thanks to his three interceptions on the day.
The high school football season concludes next weekend with state championship games and the 80th annual Shrine Game between North Carolina and South Carolina at Wofford College.
