GEORGETOWN COUNTY - Investigators arrested the restaurant owner of Bellagios in Georgetown County on Tuesday and charged him with four counts of the willful attempt to evade or defeat a tax, according to the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

William Garofalo, 71, of Surfside Beach is accused of evading more than $11,000 in sales tax from 2013 to 2016. He knowingly operated his business without a South Carolina retail license and collected sales tax from his patrons, investigators say.

Garofalo also failed to file sales and use tax returns and he did not remit the sales tax he collected.

Investigators said the suspect is accused of making false and misleading statements to SCDOR auditors and agents.

According to jail records, Garofalo is currently being held at the Georgetown County Detention Facility. If convicted, he could face fines up to $10,000 and/or up to five years in prison for each charge.
