FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A Lake City man is accused of forcing a woman at gunpoint into her vehicle, then threatening to kill her if she did not perform a sex act.
Shamaine Martrell Roberson, 29, was arrested Saturday and charged with kidnapping, grand larceny, possession of a firearm by convicted felon and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Investigators allege that Roberson forced a woman against her will at gunpoint into her vehicle in the parking lot of a bar on Kansas Drive in Florence, according to a news release from the Florence County Sheriff's Office. They say Roberson then drove the victim away from the location and threatened to kill her if she did not perform a sex act.
At some point, the victim escaped the vehicle on John Paul Jones Road, and was able to call 911 from a nearby residence, the release states. The victim hid in a ditch until she saw the closest house to call for help. She was taken to a nearby hospital for injuries from the escape.
Deputies and investigators began to search for the suspect and the victim's vehicle, according to officials. The FCSO helicopter was able to find the stolen vehicle in Olanta, and at about 10:45 a.m. the suspect was located by deputies at that location, along with property belonging to the victim.
Major Mike Nunn with the sheriff's office said, "I'm so proud of our deputies and investigators who jumped on this investigation immediately. Through great effort on their part, were able to find this vehicle, located the suspect, and hopefully bring this matter to a conclusion very quickly."
Roberson is being held at the Florence County Detention Center without bond, the release states. In the state of South Carolina, kidnapping is a felony, and if convicted Roberson could face up to 30 years in prison.
