CONWAY, S.C. – Elijah Wilson scored a game-high 16 points and Jaylen Shaw added 11, but it was not enough as Coastal Carolina fell to Charleston 71-64.

It was a game that saw Charleston (2-0) jump out early and the Chants could never get over the hump despite closing the game to one possession several times.

After jumping out to a 21-12 lead, Coastal (0-2) came back and cut the lead to two three times before halftime, but the visitors would push the lead back out to 35-30 at halftime.

Charleston hit their first four shots coming out of the locker room at halftime and three of those were three point field goals in building an 11 point lead 48-37.
Again CCU came back and cut the lead to 52-51 with nine and a half minutes left and then went over five minutes without scoring as Charleston opened up a 63-51 lead.

CCU cut the lead to three at 67-64 with 29 seconds left, but Charleston hit four straight free throws to push the lead out to the final seven point win.

CCU shot 44.4 percent from the field and Charleston shot 43, but it was at the free throw line where the game hinged.  Charleston shot 23 free throws and hit 21 while CCU only hit eight of their 14 attempts.

Charleston was led in scoring by Jarrell Brantley with 15 points and Joe Chealey added 14 and Marquise Pointer added 10.

Charleston came out firing in the opening 20 minutes hitting six of its first eight shots including its first three three point field goals.  Along the way, Charleston built a 16-8 lead, but the Chants did not go away.

Led by Williams-Powell and Robertson’s seven points, CCU was able to get back in the game and cut the lead to two, before Charleston hit its final four free throws to lead 35-30 at halftime.

CCU will not get a long break as it will host Coppin State Wednesday Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
