HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Horry County IT/GIS Department will begin a project this month using drones to fly the entire beach to provide a baseline for future comparisons using ArcGIS, according to a media release from Horry County’s drone news conference.

The data will be used for future erosion projects undertaken along the coast, the release states.

After future storm events, the beach areas will be re-flown and comparison models will be done to calculate beach erosion.

The media release states that the current condition of the beach reflects significant erosion as a result of the 2015 storm and 2016 Hurricane Matthew. The data will be documented and processed.
