CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – A man was killed and another person taken into custody following a one-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning in the Conway area.

According to information from Lance Cpl. Matt Southern with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened at 1:48 a.m., on Cultra Road.

The driver of a 2015 Chevy four-door crossed the center line and overcorrected before going off the side of the road and hitting a ditch, Southern said.

Driver Jacqueline Medlin, 49, of Conway, was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. She was taken to a local hospital and later released.

Benjamin Julian Creel, 51, of Conway was not wearing a seat belt and later died from multiple trauma at Grand Strand Medical Hospital, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.

Medlin was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a charge of felony driving under the influence, Southern said.

According to online records, Medlin remained in jail Tuesday night under a $5,000 bond.
