CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – Conway police arrested a Conway woman Tuesday evening after she was allegedly seen driving with a young child while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

According to online records from the J. Reuben Long Detention Center, Jessica Lynn Akins, 27, was charged with child endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with an unlawful alcohol concentration, having an open container in a motor vehicle and driving on a suspended license.

Akins was released Wednesday afternoon on a $4,894.50 bond, according to jail records.

An incident report from the Conway Police Department stated bystanders saw the woman allegedly driving down Church Street was yelling profanities, popping pills and falling asleep while behind the wheel.

Concerned citizens followed the woman to 1700 Church St., where she parked at a gas pump, the report stated.

Responding officers reported that Akins was unsteady on her feet and used the car for balance. She allegedly admitted to drinking around lunchtime Tuesday, according to the incident report.

After failing field sobriety tests, the woman was placed under arrest. An open alcoholic beverage, several empty bindles containing heroin residue and a hypodermic needle were reportedly found in the suspect’s vehicle, the report stated.

The 3-year-old child was placed in emergency protective custody because no family members could be located. Officers remained with the child until officials with the Department of Social Services arrived.
