BENNTTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) – A Bennettsville man has been indicted for allegedly lying to authorities about a racially-motivated kidnapping, assault and attempting shooting.

Shyheem Jermaine Nickodumus Spears, 24, was indicted in Marlboro County for filing a false report of a felony violation, according to a news release from the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office.

One July 9, 2016, the MCSO responded to Curly Lane near Odom Road to an allegation of a kidnapping, assault and attempted shooting, which was reported as racially-motivated. After an investigation y the MCSO, with assistance from the State Law Enforcement Division and the FBI, the information gathered in the case was presented to a Grand Jury, who returned the indictment against Nickodumus.

“This case has consumed hundreds of work hours of the investigators, record collection and resources of this department, SLED and the tax payers of Marlboro County and the State of SC,” said Chief Deputy Lemon. “Cases like this take us away from the cases of the true victims of crime and our resources are allocated in areas that ultimately are not true. We consulted with the 4th circuit solicitor’s office and Solicitor Rogers during the investigation leading up to the grand jury today.”
