MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – An 18-year-old man shot himself in the chest while getting out of a car in Myrtle Beach, and later died at a nearby hospital, according to a Myrtle Beach Police report.

Atu Williams II died at Conway Medical Center at 8:08 p.m. Wednesday from trauma caused by a gunshot, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler.

The shooting occurred at Spivey Drive and King Avenue at about 8 p.m., according to Lt. Joey Crosby with Myrtle Beach Police. A witness told police that Williams was in the process of getting out of the car as he pulled a firearm from his waistband, and in so doing, accidentally shot himself in the chest. The passengers in the car put him in the back and drove him to the hospital, according to the report.

The incident is still under investigation by police, Crosby said.
