HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Rising waters from the Little Pee Dee River have led to the closure of one lane of U.S. 501 on the beach-bound side in the area of Galivants Ferry, according to Lorena Pate, assistant district maintenance engineer with the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

Pate added the water was starting to encroach up too close to the roadway, which is why the call was made to shut down lane. He said it is ultimately a safety precaution.

Only one section of the beach-bound side of U.S. 501 is impacted, as opposed to the entire highway.

The Little Pee Dee River near Galivants Ferry is now just over 17 feet, which is major flood stage.
