COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - Governor Nikki Haley confirmed at a Sunday morning news conference that evacuation orders for Zone A in Horry and Georgetown counties have not yet been lifted, and she asked for patience while county officials begin their damage assessment of the areas.
Gov. Haley said that the evacuation may be lifted on Monday, saying that the state government relies on county leaders, the sheriff's offices, and local law enforcement to tell them when they need to lift the evacuation.
"That's the process that many counties have gone through," Gov. Haley said. "They are the ones in control of deciding with to lift."
Gov. Haley said that Horry and Georgetown counties are just beginning their assessment of damage Sunday morning.
She urged people to wait until the evacuation orders are lifted, and not to drive through barricades to try to get home. She added that in the past, more deaths have occurred after the storm then during one, due to people returning home to dangerous conditions.
